Every resident at Kolburne is supported by an inter-disciplinary Treatment Team comprised of staff, teachers, clinical specialists, and medical professionals working collaboratively with family members and outside agencies to design, execute and monitor each student’s clinical treatment plan and IEP goals while at Kolburne. The Team meets bi-weekly in a “huddle” to provide a whole-child assessment of the student’s week, integrating specific strategies and interventions as needed to ensure progress.
Within the therapeutic milieu, the Treatment Team is also able to integrate specific services into the student’s schedule necessary to support individual areas of weakness or delay through such supplemental interventions as counseling, Applied Behavioral Analysis, skills training, expressive therapies such as art and movement, and other therapeutic interventions such as Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Speech/Language. We believe that the entire range of neurodevelopmental disorders can be improved through this integrated and inter-disciplinary approach to treatment and learning.
Learn more about our Student Support Services:
Clinical Care
The Clinical Specialist is your student’s primary advocate and case manager. They see their students throughout the day – in the classrooms, in small group settings, in the residences, and one-to-one – and hold the “whole-child” perspective for the inter-disciplinary Treatment Team. As your child’s case manager, they are also the liaison between you, your child and Kolburne, sharing information, coordinating services and providing feedback and updates.
Treatment Planning
A Quarterly Treatment Plan Review meeting is scheduled every three months for each student, and is conducted by the Clinical Specialist, with residential, educational, nursing, and vocational staff attending as appropriate. This review summarizes progress and any changes to the Goals and Objectives and Discharge Plan in the student’s Treatment Plan, and reviews progress to the student’s academic IEP. Family members, agencies and other parties the family might consider important to the student’s progress are invited to attend this meeting.
Behavior Management
The goal of Kolburne’s Positive Behavior Development System is to create an environment that supports the mission statement. Token economies are an effective method for changing behaviors, providing frequent positive reinforcement and tracking progress. The system encourages students to work with their strengths and improve their individual behaviors and skills, leading to a higher degree of independence.
Tokens are earned for positive behaviors, tracked by Milieu staff and used by students to purchase privileges such as trips and items from Kolburne’s Token Store. Students start as Beginners and earn their way up to Executive status for the highest level of independence and rewards.

Consulting Services
Our educational and behavioral consulting services are available to schools, educators, agencies, caregivers, and parents of children with autism, and are designed to help all the parties involved assess needs, develop and implement plans and identify the agencies, resources and programs that ensure the child receives the services and support they need to be successful at home and in the classroom.
On a project basis, Kolburne’s education, therapeutic and healthcare professionals can work with parents and schools to administer a Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) to help develop and implement a student’s Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP); provide classroom and observational assessments to craft a plan for environmental and curriculum modifications; create an ABA action plan; and offer crisis intervention training, staff education training, professional development, and program consulting.
We can also be retained as consultants to help parents navigate the system and advocate for the services they need for their child to thrive and be successful. Services include:
- IEP Goal Setting & Recommendations
- Parent Advocacy
- Parent Education
- Family Counseling
- Mediation
- Finding the Right Services
