Kolburne Introduces Enhanced Residential Program

Kolburne Introduces Enhanced Residential Therapeutic Program For Students with Special Needs

New Marlborough, MA, August 1, 2011 Kolburne Therapeutic Communities (KTC), a relationship-based therapeutic community and residential treatment facility for children through young adults with autism-spectrum, trauma and trauma-related, neuro-developmental, pervasive developmental, and psychiatric disorders, has received approval from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to enhance its residential Kolburne School program.

Kolburne’s program features integrated treatment, educational services and life skills preparation in a milieu-based, relationship-oriented therapeutic setting. New enhancements to the program include an increased staff-to-student ratio of 1:3; an emphasis on sensory and non-verbal interventions; an autism-spectrum oriented curriculum; an increased focus on life skills (self-help and daily living skills) and pre-vocational training with a career counseling component; an explicit focus on relationship-based interventions and dynamics; and expressive therapies such as art and movement, among other program elements.

The new program also emphasizes Kolburne’s therapeutic milieu and relationship-based orientation to treatment. In its core approach, Kolburne believes that all learning is accomplished through ongoing, motivated relationships, and that every aspect of the program and interaction – between student and teacher, resident and staff and patient and practitioner – are meant to be helpful toward treatment goals and further Kolburne’s mission to enhance personal growth and development, build character and encourage personal success.

“We are excited to move forward with these new program enhancements to give our students the best opportunities and skills to be successful,” says Dr. Neil Berger, Kolburne’s Executive Director.

The Kolburne School, located in New Marlborough, MA, is a co-ed residential therapeutic facility and special education school for students ages 8-22 with a range of autism-spectrum, trauma and trauma-related, neuro-developmental, pervasive development, and psychiatric disorders.
