Kolburne’s Director of Nursing Margo Drohan Receives Doctorate Degree from University of Rhode Island
New Marlborough, Massachusetts, May 25, 2011 The Kolburne School, a relationship-based therapeutic center and residential treatment facility for children ages 8-22 with autism-spectrum and other psychiatric and developmental disorders, is pleased to announce that its Director of Nursing & Health Services, Margo Drohan, has received her Doctorate of Philosophy in Nursing degree from the University of Rhode Island.
Dr. Drohan, who has been at Kolburne since 2009, completed her dissertation on “Chronic Child Sexual Abuse, Psychiatric, and Medical Conditions Among Adolescents in Residential Care” and found that children with a history of early chronic sexual abuse had significantly higher numbers of medical conditions, three specific medical diagnosis -hypothyroidism, asthma, and abnormal glucose – and two social environment problems -primary support and education – than those children without history of child sexual abuse (CSA), a critical period for the identification and management of chronic illness. Specifically, findings from her research on adolescents with a history of CSA illustrate the importance of an awareness of CSA as a potential underlying factor in chronic health conditions as a way to improve the quality of life of CSA survivors.
Dr. Drohan attended Cuyahoga Falls School of Nursing in Ohio, and received both her Bachelor of Science, Magna cum laude, and her Master of Science in Nursing from Lehman College, City University of New York. The University of Rhode Island is located in North Kingston, Rhode Island. Prior to joining Kolburne in 2009, Dr. Drohan was a pediatric sexual assault nurse examiner for the Berkshire County Kid’s Place Children’s Advocacy Center in Pittsfield, MA, and associated with Hospice Care in the Berkshires as both a Nurse Practitioner and as program and clinical director of Pediatric Palliative Care.
As Director of Nursing & Health Services, Dr. Drohan and her professional nursing staff and consulting medical practitioners, oversee the health, wellness, and medical needs of all Kolburne residents.
