Students are typically referred to Kolburne by their public school district and/or by the state human services agency that funds residential placement of students.
Referred students can come from a public school setting, home, hospital, or other residential facility. While they may present with different challenges and diagnoses, appropriate students share in common the need for a therapeutic environment and staff-secured residential care.
After receiving a referral, the Director of Admissions will review the student’s medical records, professional evaluations and IEP against the program’s Admission Standards, and then schedule a visit to meet with the student in their home or current facility so all parties involved can get to know each other better. The family is also encouraged to take a tour of Kolburne and meet members of our community to help inform their selection process.
Once all information about an admission candidate is received, the referral is brought before the Admission Review Committee for an acceptance determination. The Admission Review Committee meets weekly and is comprised of Kolburne’s Executive Director, Director of Admissions, Residence Director, Director of Nursing & Health Services, Education Director, and Co-Clinical Director. Together, they review all candidate records and determine the student’s appropriateness for Kolburne. Families and referring agency(ies) will be notified of the Committee’s decision, in writing, typically within one week of the Admission Review Committee’s decision.
Once a student has been accepted to Kolburne, it is up to the family to make their selection, and the school district and/or state agencies to arrange for funding before admission.
