The mission of Kolburne is, at heart, to help our young men and women grow, heal and develop so that they can leave here and live their lives successfully and happily. For all of us, this mission we’ve accepted is a passion and a lifelong commitment. Healing the world really is done one person at a time.
Here we have an environment in which every aspect and every interaction is meant to be helpful toward treatment goals. Everything we do and everywhere we do it is therapy, and that means that every aspect of every activity and every action of every person here has a lasting and positive impact on the person they are with.
This is what we call our Therapeutic Milieu. In milieu treatment, everyone at every level, and at every moment, is actively engaged with our young men and women, utilizing their interests and enthusiasm and helping them to make progress, gain understanding, increase skills, and look forward to the future.
Our therapeutic model is “Relationship-Based.” We believe that relationships are at the core of all learning, growth and change for people over their entire lives. Because learning is accomplished only in the context of a relationship with another person we stay ENGAGED with our young men and women at all times, interacting with each other in a mutual and reciprocal relationship. Relating, caring, nurturing, teaching and healing are what draws us to this work, and really is what we, as people, were designed to do.
