Our Therapeutic Milieu
At Kolburne, we have an environment in which every aspect and every interaction between resident and staff, patient and therapist and student and teacher – be it in the classroom, the residences or any other part of our program – is meant to be helpful in achieving treatment goals. We call this our Therapeutic Milieu; everyone working together to provide a caring, healing environment with the singular goal of helping our children and young adults make progress, gain understanding, increase skills, and look forward to the future.
Our Relationship-based Model
Kolburne is a relationship-based therapeutic community. We believe that all learning is accomplished through ongoing, motivated relationships. Only when people are connected in joint work through mutually beneficial interactions, and are emotionally engaged and caring about each other, can real learning and change take place.
Our Therapeutic Approach
We focus on individual developmental abilities and engage students in their own learning, making certain that their interests and motivation supports everyone’s efforts toward learning and skill acqusition. Within this general framework, we introduce specific therapeutic services and supplemental interventions such as counseling, medication, Applied Behavioral Analysis, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Speech/Language, within a secure, therapeutic milieu, to support student goals and strengthen areas of weakness or delay.
Our Staff
Our community is comprised of individuals who are passionately committed to Kolburne’s mission of helping children and young adults with special needs grow, heal and develop so they can leave here and live their lives successfully and happily. Parents tell us time and again that the reason they chose Kolburne over other therapeutic facilities is our staff and the relationships they have with our students. Relating, caring, nurturing, teaching, and healing are what draw our staff to this work; every day they make a difference, and enrich, and change for the better, the life of another.
